The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the raising of the cap on subsidized LPG cylinders from nine to 12.
Addressing media here, Petroleum Minister M. Veerappa Moily said: "The Cabinet today decided to increase the subsidized cylinders to 12, starting from February 1. This would be one cylinder every month on subsidized rates."
"With this decision (Hike in LPG cap), subsidy will increase to Rs 5,000 Cr per annum," Moily added.
The government had on January 17 said the limit would be raised, minutes after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's public demand to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at an All India Congress Committee meet.
"I appeal to the Prime Minister to raise the bar of LPG usage from 9 cylinders to 12 cylinders," Rahul had said while addressing the AICC meet.
