Canadian health authorities have finally legalised the usage of the drug RU-486, commonly known as abortion pill in the country, which was pending for approval by Health Canada since 2012.

Talking about the drug that is being used in the United States since 2000 and in France since 1988, National Abortion Federation's Vicki Saporta called it great news for women, reported the BBC.

However, anti-abortion campaigners disagreed by calling it a human pesticide.

The pill, which causes a medically induced abortion earlier in the pregnancy than most surgical abortions, is already available to women in about 60 countries and has been in use in the UK for almost a quarter century.

Health Canada confirmed that Linepharma pharmaceutical company has been told that they could begin production of the pill, which will be sold under the brand name Mifegymiso.
