Centre hikes fund allocation for small solar power plants to Rs 5,000 crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved the up-scaling of a grid connected to a rooftop and small solar power plants programme to Rs.5000 crores .

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's financial outlay for the 12th plan was Rs. 600 crore for the grid interactive rooftop and small solar system.

A financial assistance of 15 per cent of the benchmark cost for installation of grid connected rooftop solar system/project on four categories of building - residential, institutional, government and social sector is provided by the government

The institutional category covers schools, health institutions including medical colleges and hospitals, educational institution (public and private) and R and D institutes. All Panchayati Raj buildings are also covered under this category.

The Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has also approved the construction of 69 bridges, including approach roads on the Tamu-Kyigone-Kalewa (TKK) road section of the Trilateral Highway in Myanmar at a cost of over 371 crore rupees.

This will impart all weather usability to the TKK road section, which is also part of the route for the proposed Imphal-Mandalay bus service. It will improve connectivity between India and Myanmar and facilitate movement of goods and traffic.

During the visit of Prime Minister to Myanmar in May 2012, it was agreed, at the request of Government of Myanmar, to undertake construction of 71 bridges in the Tamu - Kyigone - Kalewa (TKK) road section of the trilateral highway.

The Cabinet also approved signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Urban Development Ministry and Bloomberg Philanthropies (BP), New York to support the development of Smart Cities.

The proposal entails Bloomberg Philanthropies to work as Knowledge Partner and support the development and execution of a Cities Challenge under the Smart Cities Mission. The cabinet has already approved the Smart Cities Mission in its meeting held on 29th April this year.

The proposal under the Smart Cities Mission seeks to facilitate creation of quality urban infrastructure which will lead to improvement in the quality of urban life. Bloomberg Philanthropies Government Innovation Initiatives equip mayors and local leaders with practical tools and approaches to solve major challenges and enable public sector innovation to flourish.

As Knowledge Partner, Bloomberg Philanthropies will also support the Ministry of Urban Development in helping design and manage the cities challenge.

The Cabinet has gave nod to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SINTEF, Norway and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for cooperation in the development of human resource capacity building and scientific research in the field of Recycling of Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste in India.
