Backing the demand to convert former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh's official house into a memorial, former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said that Chaudhary Charan Singh had lived in that house for a long time and that it should be converted into his memorial.

"We demand that the Chaudhary Charan Singh's house on Tughlak Road in Delhi be converted into his memorial. Chaudhary Charan Singh had lived in that house for a long time and we want that the bungalow should be declared as Chaudhary Charan Singh's memorial," Kumar said.

The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) had issued an eviction notice to Charan Singh's son Ajit Singh and subsequently disconnected the electricity and water supply.

Reacting to that, the former Bihar CM said, "There was no need to stoop so low and disconnect power and water supply to the bungalow when Ajit Singh had said that he would vacate."

The NDMC had issued Ajit Singh an eviction notice to vacate the government bungalow in which he has been staying from the past 36 years after former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh passed away.

After he failed to vacate the bungalow, the NDMC disconnected the water and power supply to the government bungalow sighting the reason as overstaying.

In retaliation, Singh's supporters, mainly farmers, took to the streets in protest, and threatened to block off Delhi's water supply if their demand was not met.

Singh, however, finally vacated the bungalow.
