Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) chairman Gajendra Chauhan on Tuesday claimed that the controversy around his recent appointment was a 'conspiracy', appealing to the students of the institute not to be influenced by politics.

"There is a conspiracy. The students should not get influenced by politics. Until I get any order from government suggesting otherwise, I will not take the backseat. I want to work for the FTII and want to bring improvements to it," Chauhan told ANI here.

Students of the FTII have been protesting against Chauhan's appointment due to his affiliation to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and his lack of experience and stature. A billboard at the entrance of the institute had last week asked Chauhan to resign and leave.

Other student groups have been protesting against the decision as well, with organisations like the AISA encouraging Chauhan to quit.
