Chelsea captain John Terry has signed a new one-year contract with the club, extending his stay until the end of the 2015-16 season.

Describing Terry as a top defender, team manager Jose Mourinho said that the new contract was not to say 'thank you very much', insisting that it was because Terry continued to perform, the BBC reported.

Terry won 13 major honours with Chelsea since making his debut in 1998, winning the Champions League, Europa League, three Premier League titles, five FA Cup trophies and three League Cup victories.

Mourinho added that he was happy that Terry completely deserves the new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches.

Currently, Chelsea stand clear on top of the Premier League table with a six-point advantage and a game in hand.
