Current Premier League leaders Chelsea have emerged as shock candidates to land Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, if the young footballer rejects his new contract offer at Anfield.

The bookies have reportedly tipped Chelsea side as joint-favourites along with Real Madrid to sign the star winger, who is currently stalling over a new deal at Liverpool, with both sides been given a 5/2 price to become the England ace's next club.

Sterling has been offered an 'incredible' new deal according to his boss Brendan Rodgers and it is rumoured that the wage on offer is more than 1,00,000 pounds-per-week, the Daily Star reported.

However, Rodgers has suggested that he would not be held to ransom by the England international even if the Jamaican-born English football star is one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

The Northern Irishman said that Liverpool are certainly not a club who are going to give out way, way above what a player is worth at a certain time in a career, adding that it is not a case of giving any player what they want.

The contract situation is cloaked in doubt at present, with no real progress seemingly made since early February.

However, Sterling, who joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers in 2010, recently claimed that he is confident that the club and his representative can thrash out a deal that satisfies both parties.

Sterling said that it is not a distraction to him, adding that he is concentrating on winning games for Liverpool and is hopeful that it would be done soon. He claimed that he speaks to his representative every day and he has informed him to concentrate on playing football, and him and the club would deal with it.

Sterling insisted that he is happy playing football and is focused on trying to do his best for Liverpool.
