The event, which has been organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), will also see Avinash Joshi, Joint Secretary (Petrochemicals), Dept. of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, attending it.

The symposium would discuss potential and opportunities of coal gasification in India, coal to chemicals opportunities, coal to petrochemicals developments in China and lessons for India and India specific developments in the sector.

The Indian Chemical industry is a critical part of the Indian economy with key linkages to various segments of industry.

The sector has huge unrealised potential for growth but India is currently challenged due to inadequate availability of feedstock and building blocks in comparison to the competing countries blessed with oil and gas resources.

Since India has limited availability of crude oil and gas, there is a need to aggressively pursue alternate sources like coal, pet coke and bio-mass.

China has developed a strong base of coal-based chemical industry and is vigorously pursuing research work in coal based chemistry. India, with its large deposit of coal can pursue a similar strategy. A number of developments in this are underway, globally as well as within India.
