India football captain Sunil Chhetri scored a brilliant hat-trick to help Mumbai City FC complete a 5-1 rout of North East United FC in the highest-scoring match of the Indian Super League at the D Y Patil Stadium here on Wednesday.
Chhetri put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute with a clinical penalty strike before Boithang Haokip restored momentary parity four minutes later.
Chhetri then restored the lead for Mumbai with a close-range strike five minutes before half-time. He became the first Indian to get a hat-trick in the ISL when he dispatched another penalty three minutes into the second half.
Mumbai maintained a complete stranglehold when Sony Norde consolidated the lead in the 51st minute before Frantz Bertin completed North East United's humiliation three minutes before the final whistle.
After securing a third straight win, Mumbai have climbed to second spot in the points table.
