China is boosting its efforts on cybersecurity and has formed a new high-level committee that is aiming to turn the nation into an 'Internet power'.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is leading the new government body, said cybersecurity and information technology had become a matter of national security.

He added that without cybersecurity there is no national security and without information technology there is no modernization.

According to PC World, Chinese officials have said the nation is a major victim of cyberattacks, with many coming from the United States and some originating from South Korea and Germany.

Besides cybersecurity, China's new committee will cover "online content management".
