China is reportedly displeased with US President Barack Obama meeting the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
China had warned US of serious impairment to China-US relations if the latter were to go ahead with the meeting.
However, Obama decided to meet the leader and pledged his support for the protection of Tibetans' human rights in China.
During their meeting in the White House Map Room, Mr Obama and the Dalai Lama reportedly said they hoped talks would resume between Beijing and the Tibetan spiritual leader's representatives, the BBC reported.
In protest against the encounter, China's Vice-Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui said that the country expressed strong indignation and firm opposition, adding that the Tibetan issue was the domestic affair of China, and the United States bore no right to interfere.
