China's moon rover, Yutu (Jade Rabbit), has experienced a mechanical control anomaly, which scientists have attributed to complicated lunar surface environment.

According to State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence (SASTIND), the problem emerged before the rover entered its second dormancy at dawn on Saturday as the lunar night fell, China Daily reported.

The lander, which is another part of the Chang'e-3 probe, had also fallen asleep earlier on Friday.

The pair had gone dormant for two weeks about one month back when mission's first lunar night occurred.
