A nationwide crackdown in China has resulted in authorities seizing almost USD 500 million worth of smuggled frozen meat, some of which is more than 40 years old.

According to The Guardian, the seized meat includes more than 100,000 tonnes of beef, pork and chicken wings.

An official said that the meat was smelly and that he almost threw up after opening the door where 800 tonnes were seized.

In all, 14 gangs were busted across China, including two gangs from the central province.

Food safety has been a major concern in China as the standards are low and tainted product scandals are common.
