In a bid to prevent harm to birds and others, the Telangana Government has banned the sale and use of Chinese manja.

The ban order was issued on the eve of Makar Sankranti, also known as Pongal in the South. Kite flying is an integral part of this harvest festival.

An order issued by the state government said that in exercise of the powers conferred under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, they are imposing complete ban on procuring, stocking, sale and use of 'Chinese dor' that is likely to cause grievous injury and inconvenience to animals, including birds as well as human beings.
