A university in China has banned its student from participating in any Christmas festivities saying that they should "resist the expansion of Western culture".

Although the festivities are growing in stature in the country, the Modern College of Northwest University is forcing students to watch pro-communist propaganda films and warned them that they would be punished if seen marking the Christmas festival, reported the Independent.

Posters around the campus urged the students to be "outstanding sons and daughters of China, oppose kitsch Western holidays".

Attendees also said that teachers stood guard to prevent the students from leaving the three-hour propaganda video session that included the screening of the movie Confucius.
