The Congress Party on Thursday called for a detailed enquiry into the Chittoor encounter case in Andhra Pradesh, which left 20 alleged red sanders smugglers dead, terming the incident a 'gross violation' of human rights.
"What's happening in Andhra is very serious. This is a very serious issue and it merits the most serious of investigations. There are points of view from both sides and we are not in a position to judge sitting here." Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said, speaking to ANI.
Pushing for a joint investigation by both state governments and stern action from the Centre, Dikshit stated that a detailed enquiry must be conducted so that if the encounter was indeed staged, the people responsible can be brought to justice.
"The state governments and the Government of India should come together to investigate the issue. The Home Ministry should step in immediately and ensure that a completely detailed enquiry is done, so that the truth may surface" he said.
Earlier this week, the police in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district confirmed the encounter killing of at least 20 persons reportedly involved in the smuggling of Red Sanders trees.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the chief secretary and the DGP of Andhra Pradesh, calling for an explanation for the act of the police and forest officials within two weeks. The matter shall be taken up for hearing in the camp sitting of the commission to be held at Hyderabad on April 23.
