The Christ the Redeemer statue which is under renovation after being struck by lightning could take on a darker hue due to the shortage of replacement stone.

Heritage officials said that the 38m statue in Rio de Janeiro suffered the loss of a fingertip after being struck by a lightning bolt during a storm in January, but due to the shortage of the original quarry stone used in the 1931 construction, a darker stone may have to be used, News24 reported.

The statue, which is due to undergo extensive repair for its 85th anniversary and the 2016 Rio Olympics, was named as one of seven new wonders of the world in 2007.
