Chrysanthemum exhibition held in Agartala to encourage youth to take up floriculture as a career option

Flower lovers thronged the Vivekananda Park in Agartala to witness the annual colourful winter Chrysanthemum Exhibition-cum-Competition.

Chrysanthemums were displayed which are the harbinger of pleasant cool weather for people of the state.

The three-day show, organized by the Tripura Chrysanthemum Guild, was the 15th annual function.

"We are getting very good response, a large number of people are now earning through floriculture. Earlier flowers use to come from West Bengal but now Chrysanthemum is being cultivated in various villages ant those flowers are coming to the market. Beside this many nurseries have come up here and each nursery is employing around ten people. A good number of youths are getting employed through it," said one of the organizers Ratan Saha.

 

People came from far and wide to feast their eyes on an amazing floral display created by some of the city's finest gardeners and hobby-gardeners, highlighting the beauty and versatility of different variety of Chrysanthemum flowers.

"I love flowers, and especially Chrysanthemums, and so came to the flower show. I am taking photo of each variety of flowers and print and put them in our house so that children can learn about them," added flower lover Mira Das.

The display was larger than ever this year featuring over 60 varieties of vibrant and colourful flowers. In all, 30 contestants participated.

Visitors to the show praised the arrangement of the flowers, which most described as very elaborate and magnificent.

The basic concept of having a flower show is to encourage people to realize that along with traditional flowers, there are other flowers which can be grown in the state because of suitable climate and soil conditions.

Farmers and entrepreneurs also interacted with agri-scientists and experts and took their advice on for better economic benefit through floriculture.

Moreover, the organizers believe that such show popularizes flowers and increases demand for them, particularly cut flowers.

It also sends across a message that floriculture is a viable career option for the younger generation.

Tripura's Tourism Minister Ratan Bhowmik visited the flower show to encourage its organizers and participants.
