Croatian golf ace Marin Cilic beat an indisposed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to advance to the semifinals of the US Open and will now face five-time champion Roger Federer.
Cilic, seeded 14th, dominated on his own serve and was helped by a string of errors Berdych made to win 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in two hours and four minutes and advance to the last four of a major for the second time.
Berdych, the sixth seed from the Czech Republic, said that it was horrible from the beginning, The BBC reported.
Cilic, on the other hand, said that it was a truly amazing day for him, and added that it was very gutsy in difficult conditions. He said that he adjusted better than Berdych and could rely on his serve.
Cilic said that he played pretty good tactically and he is pretty happy with everything. He added that he has had tough times over the last couple of years and he is really happy that things are working out.
Meanwhile, Swiss tennis ace and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer beat France's 20th seed Gael Monfils 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the US Open semifinal, the report added.
