A perfect 100-carat emerald-cut white diamond was sold for 22.1 million dollars at Sotheby's auction house in New York.

The diamond, which was originally mined by De Beers in South Africa, was the highlight of the sale and was bought by an anonymous buyer after mere 3 minutes of bidding, the BBC reported.

There are only six perfect diamonds weighing more than 100 carats that have been sold in the past 25 years, and this gem, which had taken more than a year to be carved to perfection, was estimate to bring in between 19-25 million dollars.

Gary Schuler, head of Sotheby's jewellery department in New York, said that the diamond was "the definition of perfection," with color whiter than white, and as transparent as "a pool of icy water.
