A cleric in Saudi Arabia has issued a fatwa against "all-you-can-eat" buffets.

Saleh al-Fawzan, who made the proclamation during a broadcast on a Quranic TV station in Saudi Arabia, said that anybody who enters a buffet and eats 10 or 50 riyals without deciding the quantity would be violating Sharia law, the Huffington Post reported.

Musa Furber, a different Muslim scholar who is also qualified to issue fatwas, defended the fatwa and said that 'the value and quantity of what is sold should be pre-determined before it is purchased'.

However, Islamic Supreme Council of America said that fatwas are not generally regarded as being legally binding and the edict is "optional for the individual to respect or not".
