Coimbatore's civic agency has implemented an American technology, TechRevetment, to strengthen the bunds of one of the largest water bodies in the city, Ukkadam Big Tank.
This American technology was adopted to solve the problem of soil erosion during rainfall. The corporation has sanctioned Rs. 45 lakh for the first phase of implementation of the technique. Based on its success, the technology would be extended to other lakes.
"The Coimbatore Corporation has started this process of strengthening the lake bunds by technology Revetment. We have about eight lakes in Coimbatore city. We are starting with this technology at the Ukkadam tank bund," said Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan.
The bund is being constructed on a stretch of about 1.5 kilometre and the work is expected to be completed within two months.
"This technology is by using the geo-fabric material. It is a monolithic structure comparing with the other traditional bund strengthening materials like hollow block. It is a monolithic one which means it will provide for tensile strength and grip than the conventional styles and technologies," he said.

The geo-fabric has two layers outer and inner and the concrete is pumped into it.
This technology is widely used in America and the Europe and while implementing it, the water is not removed from the lake, unlike in conventional methods where the tank has to be empty. This concrete wall will prevent erosion of the bund.
This technology is eco-friendly and will last for over 75 years. The concrete wall will not affect the fish culture of the lake.
