The family of Formulas One legend Michael Schumacher, who is fighting for his life following a serious ski injury, has released an official statement thanking his doctors and requesting privacy as they maintain a bedside vigil with the seven-time world champion.

'Adrenaline junkie' Schumacher remains in an induced coma in a hospital in the French town of Grenoble after suffering critical head injuries from a skiing accident on Sunday.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Schumacher's long-time personal assistant Sabine Kehm released a statement on behalf of the German's family, which includes his wife and two children, and stated that they would like to thank the medical team for continuing to do their best to help Schumacher.

The statement also thanked Schumacher's friends, fans and his well-wishers who have expressed their sympathy, support and sent their best wishes for his speedy recovery, although it requested the media to respect the family's privacy at such time.

The statement did not include any additional information on Schumacher's health following brain surgery.

Schumacher's fight for life has sparked an outcry of support from a number of high-profile people, including the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former US President Bill Clinton, the report added.
