Complementing the people of Chennai for the resilience that they have shown in confronting their worst natural calamity after record breaking rains, Union Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said it has done a commendable job and has demonstrated a good example to the nation.

"The tragedy is huge, any amount of help may not suffice as the government of India also has some limitation. Chennai is seeing rare calamity of severe nature. The entire country need to help the state. I am very thankful and particularly complement the Chennai people for the resilience they have showed.. All section of the community has come forward they have done a commendable job. They have shown a good example to others also," Naidu told media here.

Naidu added that the things are improving but the real problem starts now as once the water starts reseeding then the health hazards, causalities will be known.

"The army, navy, air force everyone is doing their duty and I have been in constant touch with the defence minister. Defence airplane and Navel ships has been deployed. Air India is also making a special drive to lift the stranded passenger to different places. This process will go on.. Govt of India is in constant touch with the state," he added while talking about the rescue operation which is being undertaken.
With rainfall easing from Wednesday night in Chennai, there has been some relief for the marooned people. However, normal life continues to be affected in Chennai, its suburbs and nearby districts.

Relief agencies are working round the clock as water has flooded people's homes, roads and offices and people sheltered in relief camps and stranded on rooftops.

Rainfall has decreased compared to Wednesday. Due to less rain, water level has come down in many areas. And relief workers have been fanning out to more and more flooded places. But overflowing lakes and breaches in embankments have resulted in people being forced out of their homes.

Overflowing lakes in Mudichur, Vardarajpuram, West Tambaram, Manickam have led to flooding in those areas and movement of vehicles has come to a standstill. Thousands of homes and offices are deluged and normal life has been badly affected.
