The Congress party on Wednesday called on the Election Commission to consider the request of ballot paper voting for the upcoming Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) elections.
Congress leader P.L. Punia said that the Election watch dog should register the request and evaluate its pros and cons before rejecting the idea.
"Post Uttar Pradesh elections Mayawati ji made very serious allegations that tampering was done with the EVMs. Similarly Arvind Kejriwal ji before MCD elections has demanded for ballot paper voting," Punia told ANI here.
"I would say that the Election Commission should take cognizance of the same and not blatantly rule out the demand. The Election Commission should register the demand look at it then pronounce a verdict," he added.
Kejriwal yesterday directed chief secretary MM Kutty to write to the state election commissioner, asking him to hold the upcoming municipal elections through ballot papers. Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken also made a similar demand.
"Serious doubts have cropped up in the minds of voters as to the free-and-fair nature of the electoral process. We demand that these elections be held using the traditional ballot system," he said.
The civic polls will be held on April 22.
