The Congress Party on Saturday announced that Union Minister Harish Rawat will succeed Vijay Bahuguna as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
Announcing the party's decision, Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said, "Yesterday, Vijay Bahuguna had resigned from the post of Chief Ministership. Today, all the MLAs' had a meeting. We had attended the meeting as representatives of AICC."
He said Bahuguna had presented a proposal, in which the Congress Uttarakhand legislators appealed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to choose a new leader of the state.
"Gandhi, who is on a tour of Karnataka, agreed on Harish Rawat's name for the post of CM. Afterwards, the Congress legislators in Uttarakhand supported Gandhi's decision," he added.
On Friday, Bahuguna had resigned as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
"According to direction of the party High Command, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor. I will continue to work for the people here," Bahuguna had said.
It is believed that the way Bahuguna handled the flash floods and the massive rescue and rehabilitation work in the state last year brought his leadership skills into question.
