Former union external affairs minister S.M. Krishna on Saturday said that the Congress Party will eventually have to be led by a younger person (read Rahul Gandhi) but under the supreme guidance and overall mentorship of party president Sonia Gandhi.

"More than 50 percent of people in this country are in the age group of 30. So, it is but natural that the Congress eventually will have to be led by a younger person, under the supreme guidance and overall

mentorship of Sonia Gandhi who has led the party in an exemplary manner," said Krishna.

He said he was sure Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has learnt quite a bit during his travels around the country in the last few months.

"And, I am sure that he will pick up and will emerge as a fine young man who will expose the causes of the common people. Right now, he has taken up the cause of agriculturalists and there are hundred problems in this country. And, I hope, that Rahul Gandhi will be able to lead the party and eventually assume the responsibility, making a challenge for the prime ministership," he added.

Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh have also echoed similar sentiments.
