Congress targets BJP, says 'our culture doesn't permit us to ignore seniors'

The Congress Party on Sunday downplayed senior leader Jairam Ramesh's remark that time is up for leaders over 60 years of age, saying it is not the grand old party's culture unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to send senior leaders on compulsory leave by putting them in the 'Margdarshak Mandal'.

Congress media cell chief Randeep Surjewala said while his party continues to promote, harness and ensure that young talent progresses, it also believes that the recipe for country's growing problems is to get from elders' experience and sending them to the 'Margdarshak Mandal' is not correct.

"I haven't seen Jairam ji's statement, but one thing is clear that the Congress Party has stated many a times that experience and youthful vigour both are an ideal combination for taking the party forward," he said.

Ramesh had earlier said in an interview that the Congress must get the 30-year-olds and 40-year-olds in positions of prominence as the time for those above 60 years of age is over.

The Congress leader had also said that when party vice-president Rahul Gandhi assumes charge, it's not one individual taking over but a whole team being put in place.
