The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been asked by the Congress Party to ensure effective regulation of social media.

The Congress has claimed that social media outlets like the Internet are being misused to malign political opponents and cautioned that if regulatory mechanisms are not put in place, there is no guarantee that general elections will be free and fair.

A letter to this effect was forwarded to Chief Election Commissioner V. S. Sampath by K. C. Mittal, the Secretary of the legal department of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Mittal has called for guidelines to be issued to regulate objectionable content on social media. He said these contents violate the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
