Congress leader Ambika Soni on Sunday said that her party was ready to offer support to any party which was willing to form a secular government in Jammu and Kashmir.
"We don't have the mandate to form a government. We don't have the mandate to take the initiative to form a government. But, after the results were announced the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir Congress, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz, both individually and publicly offered the support of the Congress party's 12 MLAs to any party who will make efforts to make a secular government in the state of Jammu and Kashmir," she told media persons here.
Governor N. N. Vohra had earlier written to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to meet him on January 1, and hold discussions about government formation in the state.
According to reports, the PDP and the BJP have been asked to come and discuss their plans over government formation in the state.
The communication from the Governor is the first step toward the formation of a new government in the state.
The Jammu and Kashmir elections results threw a deeply fissured mandate for the 87-member state assembly with the PDP securing 28 seats, the BJP 25, the NC retaining just 15 seats while the Congress got 12 seats.
