The Congress Party on Thursday dubbed the controversy surrounding the Ishrat Jahan encounter case as a "clear case of fabrication and tampering of evidences".

"It's a clear case of fabrication and tampering of evidences, and possibly destruction of records by officials at such a senior level. An FIR should be registered against them, and they should be arrested," Congress legal cell secretary K.C. Mittal told ANI.

"An investigation should also be carried out. The CBI must also get in touch with the persons behind all this conspiracy," he added.

Asserting that there could be a nexus between the government, including some ministers, and officials holding responsible positions, said Mittal, adding: "It is a very serious kind of attempt aimed to destroy evidences."

"You are tampering with the justice delivery system, you are tampering the evidence. Therefore, action should be taken, and the FIR should be registered by the CBI," he said.

He further said it is the right time for the CBI to show people that it is an independent authority in the country.

Earlier, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju alleged that former home minister P. Chidambaram attempted to give a clean-chit to Ishrat Jahan during the UPA rule.

"We have already got the reports by the one-man committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. We have seen the report and some of the important documents are still untraceable. And the intention is very clear. How these important documents are taken out of the records in the Home Ministry and why a hard core terrorist was declared as innocent through an affidavit?" he said.

Former home minister P. Chidamabram, who drew flak for the alleged two affidavits filed by the Centre in the Ishrat Jahan case, said the reports published in a leading daily "completely exposed the fake controversy created by the NDA government", adding that it vindicates his stand.
