The Congress Party on Sunday welcomed the elevation of Sitaram Yechury as the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), saying the latter has contributed immensely to the parliamentary functioning.
"He (Yechury) has contributed greatly to the parliamentary functioning and his elevation to that post is a very deserving thing. Congress Party wishes him well," said Congress spokesperson P.C. Chacko.
"Yechury has been doing an excellent job in the opposition. Even in the Parliament, he was working as a very effective member of the opposition," he added.
Earlier today, senior CPI (M) leader Yechury was unanimously elected the party's new general secretary.
Yechury, who is the fifth general secretary of the CPI (M), replaces Prakash Karat who stepped down after three terms.
