The Congress party's women's wing staged a protest here on Friday against actor-turned-politician Hema Malini's statement that widows from West Bengal and Bihar should stay in their respective states instead of crowding Vrindavan.

"The shameful comment of Hema Malini regarding widows is very unfortunate. This is very insensitive and bad. For this shameful comment, she should apologize," said Congress women's wing Chief Shobha Oza.

"Through this, she has shown the perspective and mindset of the BJP towards widows and women," she added.

On her recent visit to Mathura, Malini said that there are already 40,000 widows in Vrindavan and there is no room to accommodate more.

The holy city of Vrindavan is home to around 2,000 widows from different states including West Bengal and Bihar.
