Reacting to the recent Birbhum gangrape case where a tribal woman was raped by thirteen men on the directions of the village authorities, West Bengal Governor M.K Narayanan said that his verdict on the case was that the accused should be given corporal punishment.
"I have already given my verdict, and I think that the accused should be subjected to corporal punishment. I am totally against whatever happened, and we need to take extremely strict actions on this case," said Narayanan.
"There is only one law and one justice and no one can go above it, though the most important thing that should have been done in this case was to prevent it," he said.
He further said that the criminals should not be associated with any political party.
"They are all human beings, it has nothing to do with parties," he said.
The Supreme Court on Friday and issued a notice to the state government regarding the horrific incident of gang-rape of a tribal woman by 13 villagers in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
The incident took place on Monday night on the order of the village court presided by village head, who decided to punish the girl for having an affair with a boy from a different community.
She was admitted to the Labhpur primary health centre but was later transferred to Siuri hospital.
The parents of the victim filed a complaint with the Labhpur police station, and so far five people have been arrested.
