Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat on Monday demanded the arrest of the constable, who thrashed a woman with a brick, and said that a police uniform cannot be used as a shield to protect a person indulging in an act of violence.
"A police uniform cannot become a shield to protect a person, who is indulging in a violent act. I am concerned about the child also; to see the mother being beaten up, what will be the impact on the child? On both these counts, there must be case registered against the person concerned and he should be arrested as any ordinary person," Karat told ANI.
Karat asserted that the police constable should be arrested like any other person indulging in violent act.
"If anybody stands on the road and throws a brick at a woman who has a child with her, the person will be immediately arrested. Why should the constable use his uniform as a shield to protect himself? He should be arrested, he has committed a violent act and he should face the law," she added.
Earlier in the day, a Delhi traffic policeman was caught on camera attacking a woman with a brick.

The victim was on her way home after picking up her children from school on a two wheeler, when the policeman struck the woman with a brick.
Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said the accused policeman has been suspended.
"Strict action will be taken against him. We regret that such a shameful act has been committed by a traffic policeman," Bassi said.
