Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury, who was elevated to the post of general secretary on Sunday, stated that under his leadership, the party would 'champion' the ideals of the people as well as influence the agenda of the government.
"Our priority will be how to move forward on the basis of the economic policies [of the BJP government at the Centre] that are imposing greater burden on the people and the communal ideology that is dividing the country and the people," Yechury told the media.
"The line has been decided, the question is how to implement it and equipping ourselves to utilise these objectives and to be in a position to uphold and champion peoples' causes and influence the agenda of the government," he added.
Earlier on Sunday, Yechury was unanimously elected the party's new general secretary.
Yechury, who is the fifth general secretary of the CPI (M), replaces Prakash Karat who stepped down after three terms.
