The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday welcomed President Pranab Mukherjee's statement that religion shouldn't be used as a cover to satisfy the hunger of power for an individual, adding that the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and other fundamentalist organisations should behave as responsible citizens of the country.

"President Mukherjee is a senior statesman of our country and has gone through several experiences during his life. Whatever he has said about the core values of our Constitution, have also been said by people who were concerned about the country's integrity, unity and its progress since the days of Gandhiji," CPI leader D Raja told ANI.
