European football's governing body (UEFA) has begun disciplinary action proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation after a swastika symbol was marked on the ground before their match against Italy in Euro CUP 2016 qualifiers.

UEFA said it was acting after incidents of 'racist behaviour' at Friday's match, the BBC reported.

The swastika, which is widely recognised as the symbol of Nazi Germany, was seen during the first half of the match and the ground staff was not successful in covering it up.

The Croatian Football Federation had called the incident as an act of 'sabotage'.

Croatia's president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has called for a quick investigation of the event and said that it had caused 'immeasurable damage' to the reputation of the country.

UEFA has said that the case will be dealt with in a hearing on July 16.
