Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers and personnel on Thursday paid homage to a martyred colleague who was killed by unidentified militants in Kashmir's Nowgam area on Wednesday.

"Security forces often face limitations as they cannot respond freely in a civilian area and they have to keep civilian safety in mind. The militants are taking advantage of this fact and due to this, militants escaped and attacked the patrol party," said CRPF Special Director-General, Jammu and Kashmir zone, D. K. Pathak.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The police have also launched search operations in the nearby areas to nab the assailants.

The Kashmir region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.

Militants have been frequently attacking security bases in Kashmir since the 1990s, when there was a full-blown insurgency against Indian rule in a region over which India and Pakistan fought two of their three wars.

The Himalayan region is one of the world's most militarised zones, with India deploying more than 1.3 million troops to quell the rebellion that triggered off in 1989.
