Targetting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's diktat against the press, the Congress party on Sunday said curtailing the media's independence and freedom of speech will have an impact on democracy.

"In a democracy, media has an important role to play and also has a responsibility for a fair and balanced reporting to inform and sensitize public opinion," Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma told ANI.

"At the same time, independence of the media and the freedom of speech remain important, if that is sought to be curtailed, that will impact our democracy," he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Kejriwal had urged officials working with the Delhi Government to lodge complaints against 'defamatory' news items which 'damage the reputation' of the government with the Principal Secretary of the Home Ministry.
