The Cyberabad police on Friday said they are awaiting legal opinion in the Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula suicide case, after getting a report from the revenue department on whether he belongs to the SC community or not.
"Media could not put the burden on the police because the reports should be given from the revenue department whether he is SC or not," said Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, Sandeep Sandilya here.
He added that due to not getting the report on time, the investigation was delayed.
"As of now, we have received the report from the concern Collector that Rohith Vemula doesn't belong to the SC Community, we have written to the government and once we get the clarification final report will be made on the matter," he said.
It's been nearly two years since Vemula, a research scholar at the Hyderabad Central University, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a hostel room on January 17, 2016.
He was allegedly upset over disciplinary action taken against him by the university.
His suicide had triggered a huge political furore with the then HRD Minister, Smriti Irani, coming under attack along with Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya for having written a letter related to the matter.
