Cyclone alert issued in 14 districts of Odisha

The Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a cyclone warning in 14 districts of Odisha, after a depression was formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Director of Meteorological Observatory Sarat Sahoo said the cyclone might hit the coastal region on October 12.

"Probably it (cyclonic trends) is likely cross in the north Andhra and Odisha coast between Kalingapatnam and Paradip on the 12th October, 2013 night is what the initial analysis indicates," Sahoo said.

Odisha's Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management, Surya Narayan Patro, said that the concerned authorities have made adequate arrangements to counter the potential natural disaster.

"The government is fully prepared and we will try to ensure that there would no loss of life and property," Patro said.

 

Consequent to the intensifying of the depression in the Bay of Bengal, had directed the officials of the cyclone prone districts to carefully monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the state government has set up emergency control rooms and deployed disaster response teams to meet any untoward eventuality.

In 1999, a 'super-cyclone' battered the coast of Orissa (Odisha) for 30 hours with wind speeds reaching 300 kilometers per hour, which killed 10,000 people.
