Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat emerged as the fastest driver, while reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished third in a rain-soaked second practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday.

Russian driver Kvyat was 0.023 seconds quicker than Nico Rosberg, with Mercedes team mate Hamilton third ahead of Daniel Ricciardo at Suzuka.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was fifth ahead of team mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Earlier in the opening practice session, Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz Jr. set the fastest time amidst heavy downpour, Sport24 reported.

Hamilton heads into Japanese Grand Prix holding a 41 point-lead over Rosberg.

Meanwhile, four-time world champion Vettel will aim to sustain the momentum and stamp Ferrari's authority after winning the previous race in Singapore.
