David Bowie, who died of cancer aged 69, was determined to keep fighting for his 15-year-old daughter Lexi.
The music legend's close friend Ivo Van Hove, the director of his stage show Lazarus, said that Bowie really wanted to go on for his daughter, but it was physically not possible, the Mirror reported.
Hove described seeing the 69-year-old collapse with exhaustion as he attended the premiere in New York on December 12.
"I felt he was not in a death struggle but a struggle for life - he wanted to live on," the director said.
The 'Ashes to Ashes' singer also has a 44-year-old son Duncan 'Zowie' Jones with former wife Angie.
