David Bowie's new songs for musical stage show Lazarus are being termed as "classics" by the musical stage show director Ivo van Hove.

Belgian theatre director told the BBC in an exclusive interview at Sunday's Olivier Awards that some of the songs sounded as if one had heard them forever just like classics.

Hove asserted that there were romantic songs in the show because Bowie's songs were deeply romantic and there were songs about violence and the ugly world surrounding them.

He also described the new songs of Bowie as "really great stuff".

Hove also confirmed that the 68-year-old singer-songwriter would not be appearing on stage in Lazarus, which is based on movie 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'.
