The chief of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Michele Leonhart will retire and leave the agency in mid-May, Attorney General Eric Holder announced.

According to Fox News, the decision came following a scathing federal watchdog report about sexual misconduct within the agency and an increasing lack of confidence in her ability to make changes and lead.

Leonhart served 35 years in the DEA and is the second woman to hold the job of DEA administrator.

Holder said that Michele has led the agency with honour and that he was proud to call Michele his partner in the work of safeguarding their national security.
