Death toll in South Africa train crash rises to 12

The death toll in Thursday's passenger train crash in South Africa rose to 12.

Twelve people died and around 260 were injured, local media reported, citing, South Africa transport minister as saying.

The toll is likely to increase.

According to the Minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganyi, the truck driver involved in the accident was "taking chances."

A Shosholoza Meyl passenger train collided with a truck and a car near Kroonstad in South Africa's Free State province, the local media reported.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. An investigation is underway, said Maswanganyi.

The Shosholoza Meyl train, which operates between the country's major cities, was heading to Johannesburg from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, according to reports.
