Chile knocked Spain out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup as they ended the defending champions' dominance of global football with a 2-0 win.

Spain were aiming to become the first nation to retain the title since Brazil in 1962, but, after losing the opening match 5-1 to Netherlands, they surrendered their crown in the Maracana.

According to the BBC, Chilean forward Eduardo Vargas provided his side with the lead in the first half followed by another goal from midfielder Charles Aranguiz in the 43rd minute to secure their victory.

It was Chile's first competitive victory over Spain, whose elimination means that they are the fifth defending champions to fail to progress from the group stage at the World Cup.

Spain will now contest a dead rubber against Australia on 23 June, while Chile will face Netherlands to determine who finishes top of Group B in the World Cup.
