Thousands of Taiwanese troops marched and showcased their military hardware in a symbolic move to assert that its forces, not the Chinese communists, led the campaign that drove out imperial Japan from China 70 years ago.
The two-hour-long parade displayed homegrown missiles, Apache attack helicopters and a mountain bike team designed for stealth missions. It was followed by awards for aged World War II veterans in their attire from the 1940s, reported the Dawn.
After the parade, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said in a speech that the war of resistance was led by the Republic of China and Chairman Chiang Kai-shek was the force behind it, referring to the old Nationalist government's strongman.
China and Taiwan split during the 1949 civil war. Beijing has repeatedly claimed that the Chinese Communists had led the resistance against Japan.
