The Congress Party on Wednesday asked Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani to immediately step down from her post after a Delhi court took cognizance of a complaint filed against the latter for allegedly giving false information about her educational qualification.
"Smriti Irani has misled the entire country and the Election Commission by giving different affidavits as far as her educational qualifications are concerned. She should immediately step down and a criminal FIR should be lodged against her," Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza told ANI.
"The court finds the case cognizable, Smriti Irani should be asked to step down for a fair probe," added Congress leader Randeep Surjewala.
Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Sudhindra Bhadoria also added that Irani has no moral right to continue in office.
"Court has taken her degree case into cognizance. Smriti Irani has now no moral right to continue in office," said Bhadoria.
The trial court has fixed August 28, as the next date for recording pre-summoning evidence in the complaint filed against Irani.
